Republic Bank robbed

Shelbyville police are seeking a man they say robbed Republic Bank on Midland Trail Tuesday afternoon.

The suspect, a black man 5 feet, 11 inches tall and weighing about 160 pounds, robbed the bank about 2:40 p.m. He was wearing a Wendy's restaurant uniform, with a hat.

The man left through the south door of the bank into the parking lot of the Village Plaza Shopping Center.
Anyone with possible information regarding this crime should contact the Shelbyville Police Department at 502-633-2326, Shelby County Dispatch at 502-633-2323, or Shelbyville/Shelby County Crimestoppers at 502-633-4500.

Murder victim attended Shelby County High

An Anderson County man was charged with killing his girlfriend over the weekend, and both the victim and the accused have Shelby County ties.

State police charged 33-year-old Gary Bancroft with killing Renee Mobley, also 33. Until a few weeks ago, Bancroft was a butcher at Purnell's Sausage in Simpsonville, and Mobley is a former Shelby County resident. She attended Shelby County High School.

Shortly after noon on Saturday, police were notified of a possible homicide at Mobley's residence, in the 4000 block of U.S. 62 in Anderson County. On the first attempt, police were unable to make contact with anyone. After they obtained a search warrant and made entry, they found Mobley's body and Bancroft at the home. He was lodged in the Franklin County Detention Center.

Although the victim's identity has not been positively identified, authorities feel sure it is Mobley, who is the mother of two children, ages 7 and 16.

Renee's father, Benny Mobley, told WLEX-TV in Lexington Bancroft had been abusive in the past. Months ago, he said, Bancroft allegedly threw a knife at Renee, but missed.

Paying it forward

Christy Meredith only longs for Pop-Tarts, and maybe a few cans of Vienna sausages, and perhaps some Rice Krispie Treats. Only she needs lots of them, and she needs them now. Meredith is coordinator of the Shelby County Backpack Project Inc., which feeds hundreds of children every weekend who would probably otherwise go hungry.

My unintentional trips to Waddy

It is way too easy to miss exit 35 as you're headed east on I-64 at night. Everyone I've asked has at least one time missed the exit and thus has had to drive to Waddy to turn around. Why is that?

Creamer named to KHSAA Hall of Fame

Tom Creamer may have bounced around some as a high school basketball coach, but the pinnacle of his career came when he lighted in Shelby County and took the 1978 Rockets to the top. When it was time to settle down somewhere a little more permanent, he again looked toward Shelby County; it has been his home since 1992.

From the 'back barn' to the show ring

It has been a long time and a lot of good horses since Mike Spencer started grooming in the "back barn" for legendary saddlebred trainers Charles and Helen Crabtree. Barely a teenager, Spencer went to work as a groom for the Crabtrees. He was assigned to work in the barn in the back of the property.
