Shelby County native, former
secretary of state, Drex Davis dies
Shelby County native and former Secretary of State Drexell R. Davis died Wednesday in Frankfort at age 88.
In 1963, Davis was elected clerk of the Court of Appeals. In 1971 he was elected treasurer and secretary of state in 1975. Four years later it was back to the treasurer's office, and in 1983 he won election again as secretary of state.
Les Fugate, a spokesman for current Secretary of State Trey Grayson, told the Courier-Journal it was Davis who created the first centralized state election night system for reporting results.
Davis is survived by a son, Drexell Davis Jr., and a daughter, Ann L. Davis.
