Face off
Shelby's Dee Dee Davis defends against a Rockcastle County player Wednesday in the finals of the Max Performance Lady Rockets Holiday Tournament. Rockcastle won 43-38.

Rockcastle stops Shelby
in Lady Rockets invitational
The Shelby County Lady Rockets closed the gap to 2 with just over a minute to play, but couldn't finish off the Rockcastle Lady Rockets in the finals of the Max Performance Lady Rockets Holiday Tournament Wednesday night. Behind the strong play of center Sara Hammond, Rockcastle beat the Shelby girls 43-38.
Shelby took a 24-21 lead into the locker room at the break, but Hammond's nine blocked shots, 17 rebounds and 14 points helped Rockcastle sink Shelby, especially in the final frame. As the seconds ticked away, Shelby missed several opportunities to tie or go ahead while the composed Rockcastle girls held on for the win.
Shelby's Aaliyah Wells led all scorers with 16. She also grabbed 14 rebounds and forced 14 turnovers.
Legal assistant pleads guilty
to embezzling $400,000
A Louisville television station is reporting that Jody Wills pleaded guilty Wednesday to charges that she embezzled hundreds of thousands of dollars from attorney Mark Dean.
As part of the plea deal, Wills was sentenced to 10 years in prison and ordered to pay restitution, WAVE-TV reported.
Wills allegedly stole at least $400,000 between 1999 and 2003 while she was a legal assistant at Dean Law Office.
Wills will be formally sentenced Feb. 19.

Meredith is coordinator of the Shelby County Backpack Project Inc., which feeds hundreds of children every weekend who would probably otherwise go hungry.

My unintentional trips to Waddy

It is way too easy to miss exit 35 as you're headed east on I-64 at night. Everyone I've asked has at least one time missed the exit and thus has had to drive to Waddy to turn around. Why is that?

Creamer named to KHSAA Hall of Fame

Tom Creamer may have bounced around some as a high school basketball coach, but the pinnacle of his career came when he lighted in Shelby County and took the 1978 Rockets to the top. When it was time to settle down somewhere a little more permanent, he again looked toward Shelby County; it has been his home since 1992.

Dedicated to the horses

At age 16, Ricky Mendoza spent four days in the Rio Grande crossing into the United States from Mexico. At times, the water was up to his chin. But he made it across and vowed he would never return.

From the 'back barn' to the show ring

It has been a long time and a lot of good horses since Mike Spencer started grooming in the "back barn" for legendary saddlebred trainers Charles and Helen Crabtree. Barely a teenager, Spencer went to work as a groom for the Crabtrees. He was assigned to work in the barn in the back of the property.
