FAC

Open play Pickle Ball is 9-11 a.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays at the Shelby County Family Activity Center. The cost is the daily admission. Line dancing is Friday nights. There is an additional charge. Call the FAC, 633-5059 for information.

A Loving Choice Pregnancy Center

The center offers free pregnancy testing, confidential peer counseling and information on all choices in an unplanned pregnancy, baby and maternity clothing and equipment, parenting and cooking classes and referrals to local resources. All our services are free and open to anyone. Center hours are 10 a.m.-6 p.m. Tuesdays, 2-6 p.m. Wednesdays, and 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Thursdays. No appointment is necessary. Call 647-0300.

Free classes

GED/Adult Education classes are taught at Jefferson Community College, the Marnel C. Moorman Family Life Center and Simpsonville City Hall. Call 633-5524, ext. 33669, for dates and times.

Free beginning computer classes are taught at Jefferson Community College. Call 633-5524, ext. 33669.

Free English as a Second Language classes are taught for Shelby County Adult Education at St. James Episcopal Church. Call 633-5524, ext. 33669.

Leslie McCarthy: Making Ends Meet in a big way

Leslie McCarthy's successful fabric shop got its start 17 years ago when, of all things, the bottom dropped out of the hog market. McCarthy and Jeff, her husband of 30 years, raised hogs, and after that catastrophic end to their farming career, they "had to find something else to do," she said.

For Donna Meador, choosing to live and work in a small community was a quality-of-life decision. She could be earning more and working less at a metropolitan hospital, but the vice president of Clinical Services at Jewish Hospital Shelbyville is happy that her commute to work is five minutes long and that she can still be a nurse whenever she wants.

Did I mention he was the biggest rat I'd ever seen?

Fred was a most unwelcome guest. He let his presence be known a few weeks ago during the wee hours. Nothing can quite compare to being startled at 3 a.m. by your son, standing in your bedroom and announcing that there is a rat loose in his room. Those words were much more effective at waking a person than any alarm clock ever manufactured.
